SWaterSmart WasteWater Treatments ModelingSWater is a cloud-based software ecosystem for modeling and simulating biological wastewater treatment processes. Design, functional verification, process control and performance optimization for treatment plants.
Since 1997 — Eng. Giovanni Mappa
SWater was developed in 1997 from a research project by Eng. Giovanni Mappa, aimed at verifying the functional compliance of wastewater treatment plants, particularly regarding treated effluent quality parameters against legal limits.
The goal is to provide a tool capable not only of sizing and verifying treatment processes, but also of determining their "functional perimeter": the set of parameters defining an area where treatment processes meet discharge limits.
The platform supports design, functional verification of treatment capacity, online process control, and performance optimization, with an integrated approach embracing circular economy, sludge reduction, energy recovery, and resource recovery.
Over 25 years of refinement on real plants. SWT models have been verified and calibrated on dozens of wastewater treatment facilities across Italy.
SWT models operate like spreadsheets: input data, output data, and configuration data. Automatic or manual calculation, accessible from any device.
Biological working area chart with balancing traffic light (green/yellow/red), bar verification charts, algorithm manuals, and report printing.
Each SWT application is a specialized calculation model for a specific type of treatment process. They operate as cloud worksheets with input, output, and configuration data areas.

Activated sludge treatment with nitrification-denitrification through alternating aeration in a single tank.
Activated sludge treatment with nitrification-denitrification using membrane microfiltration (MBR).
Upgrading of activated sludge plants with attached biomass carriers — MBBR/IFAS (Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge) scheme.
Sequential batch biological nitrification-denitrification treatment for discontinuous flows.
Diagnostic software for microscopic analysis: troubleshooting of biological treatment efficiency and sludge settleability issues.
Calculation of waste and sludge quantities produced in traditional wastewater treatment plants. Economic valorization.

In 2026, SWater enters a new phase through the collaboration between Eng. Giovanni Mappa, creator and developer of the simulation models since 1997, and Andrea Vincenzo Abbondanza, founder of ELERIA and software architect with experience in building SaaS products.
This partnership combines Eng. Mappa's deep process expertise — consolidated over 25+ years of work on real plants — with Abbondanza's software design, cloud architecture, and product management skills, with the goal of transforming SWater into a modern, scalable, and market-ready platform.
The revamp includes a complete software architecture rewrite toward a microservices system, a fully redesigned user interface, and the introduction of new analysis and simulation tools.
